The film was released on 20 September worldwide with a U/A certification from the CBFC. The film received positive reviews from critics. Shubhra Gupta of "The Indian Express" gave it four out of five stars and stated, "This is hard-hitting stuff, given shape by an outstanding Rani Mukerji. This is one of her finest performances." Mayank Shekhar of "Hindustan Times" gave the film three out of five stars and said, "Rani plays her character convincingly." Meena Iyer of The Times of India gave the film 3.5 out 4 stars and stated that, "this cop-and-killer tale has power to it but somehow feels distanced. It's a pleasure to watch Rani in her 'strong' avatar; she plays the role of a soft-spoken, shy and sensitive cop who cares for all." Kunal Guha of Zoom gave it three out of five stars and said, "The Mardaani is great at drawing sustenance from its star's screen persona. But it's not without its flaws." Anupama Chopra gave the film two and a half stars and said, "Rani Mukerji is in terrific form as a gutsy policewoman in The Mardaani. She has terrific chemistry with Tahir Raj Bhasin as her harassed subordinate. Together they're remarkably good in their roles. But the rest of the film feels like an unconvincing rehash of old tropes. The villain is more like a cartoon than a real threat. And the plot, which is complex, doesn't quite hang together." Nandini Ramnath of "Outlook" gave it two out of five stars, stating that "However vigilante Avni comes across in this story, it's hard to root for her when the law she's trying to uphold fails repeatedly." Ananya Bhattacharya of "Mint" gave it three out of five stars and stated that "A problematic script doesn't help matters but it's Rani Mukerji who saves the day with her stellar performance. cfa1e77820
